Joan Mackenzie reviews Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke

Hello, I'm Joan and this book is called 'Yesteryear' by Caro Claire Burke. It's the story of Natalie Heller Mills, who drifts into marriage with a bit of a loser, and in a desperate attempt to get him to make something of himself, she persuades her father-in-law to buy them a remote ranch in Idaho, to which they relocate and where they raise a brood of kids and embrace a traditional way of life, which she then shares via TikTok with an increasingly growing audience. The problem is that Natalie doesn't entirely subscribe to this life in which she finds herself, and what I loved about it were the asides that she makes. She's got a real side eye on things. There's the quips, there's the personal commentary and there's the rage, and you know that she knows that you know that she really isn't enjoying what she's doing.
Anyway, one morning she wakes up and it is no longer the modern traditional life, it's eighteen fifty five and suddenly she's without all of the mod cons that made life possible, and there she is contending with a brood of kids that she hardly recognises and a husband who's even more useless than he used to be. This book is a terrific commentary on what really lies behind the smiles and the seemingly perfect lives that so many people lead. You can tell that there are gritted teeth behind so much of what goes on, and she's made a great statement about the lives particularly that so many women find themselves in when espousing traditional values is seen to be the modern way of life. I found Natalie entirely plausible and I really loved this book.
