The most important part of the study, in my opinion, was this:

The autistic participants were already identifying emotional tone correctly over 90% of the time before the intervention. They understood when someone was upset.

What they struggled with was expressing empathy in the socially expected format. That is a completely different thing.

A lot of autistic people are deeply empathetic, sometimes overwhelmingly so. But translating that emotion into the “right” facial expression, wording, tone, or timing can be difficult.

And I think many autistic people grew up being misunderstood because people confuse emotional expression with emotional absence.

Those are not the same thing.
