Achtung Impact Planetare Verteidigung und die DART Mission

Asteroids pose a potential threat to life on Earth. The “Planetary Defense” concept envisages that potentially dangerous celestial bodies are deflected in advance. A first attempt in this direction succeeded in 2022, when the DART mission - DART stands for Double Asteroid Redirection Test - hit the asteroid Dimorphos and thereby changed its orbit. Images of the impact and the material ejected from Dimorphos by the impact are now the subject of research aimed at learning for "Planetary Defence". The DART mission is managed for NASA by the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.

On the occasion of the 8th International Planetary Defense Conference, which took place in Vienna, the Geosciences Commission of the OeAW invited to a public information event (with contributions in German and English) on the topic "Caution Impact: Planetary Defense and the DART Mission".
