Upcycling Ball Bearing Into Rings | Machinist Ring!
Turning an used ball bearing into a nice ring with some very basic machining on the metal lathe.
I got the habit to keep all the used ball bearings that I take out of tools I restore, used ball bearings are usefull as spacers for inserting new bearings and they can provide high quality steel for forging projects if big enough! Now I found a nice and simple way to upcycle those bearing that are small and not much usefull as steel stock material. Happy with that!
By now I have a decent selection of used bearing in many different sizes so I think I can make a ring pretty much of any size by boring the inner race with the metal lathe.
Index of operation and materials:
0:08 Remove seal and cage
1:00 Easy way to separete a bearing
1:10 Anneal steel (ball bearing are hardened)
1:52 Turn inside diameter to size
2:37 Smooth with sandpaper from 240 to 1200 grit
2:51 Chamfer of the inside edge for comfort
3:16 Electrical tape on dowel holds a ring fine
3:30 Sand outside with sandpaper from 240 to 1200 grit
3:58 Buff outside with fine polishing compound and cotton wheel
4:10 Buff inside with fine polishing compound and cotton bit
-The ring is done-
4:28 Turn a brass ring
5:46 Finished as the other ring
6:30 Just a tiny bit too small to slide over
6:35 Heat up the brass ring and push it over the ring
6:50 Some good persuasion
The outer ring fit was not perfect, with a bit of force I was able to push it out, I had to insert it again and gently peen the border of the brass ring so it doesn't slide out anymore.
Thanks a lot for watching, I hope you liked the video!
