Boarders. Baby sunconures were handreared, socialised and placed with new homes.

These little guys were reared here for a bird breeder and returned after weaning.

Sun conures are an endangered species in the wild. Sun conures are endemic to South America.
Loss of habitat due to logging encroachment and illegal trapping has contributed to low numbers.
Captive breeding worldwide ensures that numbers remain sustainable.
These little guys came from a local breeder at 3 weeks old to hand raise as companion birds.
High day time temperatures mean that chicks are vulnerable in the nest.
Most breeders remove nesting boxes and build condition in their birds during hot or cold weather to ensure that chicks and parent birds remain in top condition.
Occasionally a clutch comes through unnoticed and needs extra care to ensure peak health.
Conures need higher protein and caratonoids to ensure good feather and healthy chicks.
Handrearing a clutch of sun conures for a bird breeder. Health check, high quality rearing mix with species specific enrichment are standard.
Not all birds eat the same diet. Good feather, healthy digestive systems and muscles are a sign of healthy birds.
Natural worming and parasite trwatment ensure that no chemical immune system damage occurs.
Sun conures are loving, inquisitive, cheeky, friendly birds.
To prevent needy, loud behaviour, a friend is needed for when their human carer is busy, working, out, away or sleeping.
Birds need companionship.
Sun conures need a high protein and fruit rich diet which they get from eating lots of greens, eg broccoli, peas, fruit, cooked beans, sprouts, nuts.
You can also give them dried or fresh meal worms.

A wholefood diet of seed, grains, grasses and seed heads, flowers, native tree nuts and seeds such as melaleuca, grevillia, eucalypt. Both dried and fresh.

Baby conures are handled daily in the nest to ensure confident, happy babies.
These babies however are from a bird breeder.
Babies are brought in the house to handrear as companion pets at 2 weeks old.

My own Parent birds see their babies daily, flying in and out of the house and checking on their babies progress.

While parent birds are exercising in a morning and afternoon, I check babies and do a light clean out nesting boxes with a change of nesting material every few days.

Pine shavings and a mix of diatomaceous earth, nesting herbs- lavender, mint, calendula, rose are added for freshness and to minimize parasite issues.
Once inside:
Out of brooder time is used to feed babies and check weight and health in low light to protect baby eyes and desenstize babies to handling.

Nests are dimly lit nest hollows in nature for 6 weeks until the babies climb out of the nest at fledging.

My baby birds are kept in brooder boxes resembling a nesting hollow and are allowed the climb in and out of the box as they mature, ensuring happy, confident babies.
