Want more cucumbers with fewer problems? Pruning is the secret sauce for a thriving cucumber plant!

Why prune cucumbers?
Pruning improves airflow, reduces disease, and helps your plant focus its energy on producing healthy fruit. It’s especially important for vining varieties growing vertically.

✂️ Basic Cucumber Pruning Tips:
Start with support
If your cucumbers are climbing a trellis or fence, pruning becomes more effective and manageable.

Remove lower leaves
Trim the bottom 12 inches of leaves. These older leaves are more prone to pests and mildew and don’t help fruiting.

Cut off suckers
Just like with tomatoes, cucumbers develop suckers—small shoots growing from the junction between the main stem and leaf stems. Pinch these off early to reduce overcrowding.

Focus on one leader
Limit the plant to one or two main vines ("leaders") to direct energy into fruit rather than excess growth.

Keep fruiting branches
Don’t prune off healthy flowering or fruit-bearing branches unless they’re overcrowded or unhealthy.

Prune regularly
A once-a-week trim keeps things tidy. Look for yellowing leaves, excess side shoots, and tangled tendrils.

Use clean tools
Always sanitize your pruning shears to avoid spreading disease between cuts.

Avoid over-pruning
Leave enough leaves for photosynthesis! The plant still needs foliage to support cucumber growth.

Bonus Tip: If you notice bitter cucumbers or stunted fruit, it could be due to overcrowding or lack of airflow—pruning can fix both!

Healthy pruning = healthier plants and bigger, tastier cucumbers. 🥒💚
