King Of Stink: Appalachian Ramp Festivals
In 2004, avid foodie, Steve Provence (1954-2008), followed his nose to the most pungent herb in the Appalachian region, the "Ramp." This short-lived springtime wild leek grows in the mountains from the Carolinas all the way to Michigan, and has been celebrated as both a herald of spring and a tonic for winter malaise. Ramp Festivals are a vital part of many mountain communities' social calendar, as neighbors and friends band together to gather the ramps by the bushel, cook them, and serve many creative dishes while raising much needed funds for necessary services like fire departments and rescue squads. Travel the mountains with Steve and visit many of the best Ramp Festivals the Appalachian region holds each year!
