Wiggling Worms at Work - (Read Aloud)

Welcome to our YouTube Channel for teachers, parents and kids! Today we read a great kid's book about worms.

"Wiggling Worms at Work" written by Wendy Pfeffer and illustrated by Steve Jenkins was published by HarperCollins in 2004. The book introduces children to the world of worms. It shares the importance of worms and how their existence helps plants grow.

This book can be shared with children as little as PreK-though adults. Worms are fascinating creatures and in this presentation of the book there are some live footage clips of worms sprinkled though this read aloud.

Here are some ideas on how you can use this book for lessons:

DISCUSSION QUESTION'S some questions are open ended and there are no wrong answers.
- Looking at the cover of the book--- what do you think the book is going to be about?
- What do you think worms do for work?
- Why do worms swallow grains of sand and small stones?
- What do castings look like? Why are they important?
- How do worms help plants?
- What function do the bristles provide for worms? How do they work?
- Why do worms need to stay out of the sun?
- How does the worm make a door to protect his burrow?
- Describe a wormlet.
- Do wormlets depend on their parents when they hatch from the cocoon?
- What did you like best about the story?
- Turn to page 7 (1:02) examine the picture and describe what you see. Why do you think the illustrator used these details?

WORMLET SEARCH:
Watch the footage at the end of the video (8:07) - Can you find wormlets?

Segments on the worm act like a Slinky (TM) toy. Have a Slinky on hand.

Allow kids to observe worms in this cool compost container. Kids can catch worms and place dead leaves on top and observe them as the worms eat away and make castings and rich soil. Nancy B's Compost Kit:

Having the book in any home library will support the author and allow the child to read over and over again. Should you make a purchase through my Amazon Associates Link (I may make a small commission at no additional cost to you.) https://amzn.to/3cd965A

MEASURING WORMS:
Young learners who are learning to use different forms of measurements will have fun measuring gummy worms (and sampling them as well). Use various items; ruler, pencil clips, erasers or anything.
