How to proceed with shadowing
Time: As a guide, practice 10 min. a day. Continuing this every day, even for a short period of time, is effective. Practicing 1 unit over 3 months is the goal.
How to practice: The book contains various scripts, from short practical dialogs we use in our daily life, to long conversations and monologues. Choose a dialog that is suitable for you and that you would like to try, then enjoy it as you practice.
STEP 1
Look at the text and check the meaning.
STEP 2
Check the audio while looking at the text.
Silent shadowing: This is a practice method in which you say what you hear in your head-without saying it out loud.
STEP 3
Move your mouth without looking at the text.
Mumbling: This practice method entails mumbling what you hear in a low voice. Get the feel for the intonation.
STEP 4
Follow the audio and do the shadowing, saying it loud while looking at the text.
Shadowing with the script: Listen to the audio while looking at the script and repeat immediately after the audio.
STEP 5
When you get used to doing this, then do the shadowing without looking at the text.
Prosody shadowing: This practice method takes particular aim at tuning in on rhythm and intonation, For example, the intonations for “Ah" and “Oh" are different. Be mindful of them as you practice.
Content shadowing: In this practice method, you understand and are aware of the meaning of the script during shadowing.
