Dr. Joe DeMarco, chiropractor and owner of OcraMed Health, discusses the painful condition known as plantar fasciitis.
Plantar fasciitis is the result of fascial adhesions in the plantar fascia (located at the bottom of the foot) which results in a "tugging" of the tendon that inserts into the calcaneus (heel bone). The condition can be very painful and can last for months and months.
Although the injury may be in the plantar fascia, the cause of the problem is the most important thing to address. Often times, when patients come to my office with plantar fasciitis, I find that they have very tight calve muscles on the same side.
Tight calve muscles can limit the normal motion of the calcaneus bone. This results in stress on the plantar fascia. Thus leading to plantar fasciitis. Therefore, it is very important to loosen these calve muscles.
I have found low intensity, long duration stretching of the calve muscles to work best. In addition, stretching the calve muscles at different angles is also very important.
In this video, I demonstrate the 6 main calve stretches that I have my patients perform over a 4 week period. Each week, we increase the stretch time. I have found this system to be very effective.
