India Will Protect S400 With Russia's Pantsir S1 Air Defense
The Pantsir-S1M is a modernized Russian self-propelled anti-aircraft gun and missile system designed to provide the final layer of air defense. It operates as a hybrid platform that combines rapid-fire 30mm autocannons with upgraded surface-to-air missiles, offering an extended engagement range of up to 30 kilometers. This advanced variant features superior radar capabilities specifically engineered to detect and track small, stealthy targets like loitering munitions and tactical drones which older systems often miss.

India is acquiring the Pantsir-S1M primarily to protect its high-value strategic assets, specifically the long-range S-400 Triumf missile batteries. Recent conflicts in Ukraine demonstrated that expensive long-range systems are vulnerable to low-cost drone swarms and saturation attacks. The Pantsir-S1M serves as a specialized close-in weapon to neutralize these threats before they can reach vital installations.
