Mezcal in Mexico's Oaxacan Culture

In Mexico’s Oaxaca state, farmers cultivate the agave plant to produce mezcal and tequila.

Over many centuries, Mexican mezcal artisans have perfected their craft.

Small-scale mezcal distilleries are called palenques.

Each palenque produces its own variety of mezcal, as the spirit can be made with many different agaves.

As with wine, the concept of terroir comes into play: location, climate and soil affect the mezcal’s flavor.

The famous drink plays an important role in local culture.

It is consumed on different types of occasions, including parties and funerals.

Most notably, it is enjoyed during the Day of the Dead festival, by both the living and the spirits of the deceased.

As they say in Oaxaca: “tómalo con besos" or “drink it with kisses!”
