The Aithra Tunnel is a significant infrastructure project located in West Attica, Greece. It forms part of the A8 motorway, which connects Athens to Patras. Specifically, the tunnel is situated along the Athens–Corinth section of the motorway, traversing the challenging terrain of the Kakia Skala pass—a region historically known for its hazardous driving conditions.

• Length: Approximately 1,160 meters (3,810 feet).
• Structure: Single-tube motorway tunnel with three lanes.
• Construction Period: Commenced in 1999 and opened to traffic in July 2004, ahead of the Athens Summer Olympics.

• Purpose: To enhance road safety and improve traffic flow through the Kakia Skala pass by replacing a perilous segment of the old National Road 8a with a modern, controlled-access motorway.   

The Aithra Tunnel was part of a broader initiative to upgrade the Kakia Skala pass, which included the construction of multiple tunnels and bridges to meet contemporary motorway standards. This transformation significantly improved the safety and efficiency of one of Greece’s most critical transportation corridors.
