How to make a dress bigger by adding fabric to the sides and expand the bustline and waistline by 6 inches
You’ll need to have a similar style for this to work. Your dress should have pleats or gathers along the waistline.
You will need to measure how much bigger you need the waistline to be.
With the dress on, measure across the space between the zipper to determine how big to make the panels.
When adding fabric to the sides, make sure to use a nice stretchy fabric such as 4 way stretch lycra for the most comfortable fit.
Ideally, the fabric should match in colour if possible but many times inserting a contrast colour can look really chic .
Use a ball point needle when stitching stretch fabric and stretch the fabric just a bit when sewing.
There is less chance that the stitches will break when the fabric is stretched when putting on the garment.
When stitching the fabric panel onto the dress and “sandwiching” the dress in between, make sure to wrap the fabric tautly around the top edge for a nice even finish across the side seam. You don’t want to have a “step” between the fabrics.
Adding these side panel pieces will give you more room around the waist chest and armhole. The upper chest and neckline will remain the same.
You can go the extra step of opening up the full pleat on each of the sides and redistribute the amount evenly.
