Understanding Turkey & Quail in Arkansas
Northern Bobwhite Quail populations in Arkansas have been on a steady decline in Arkansas for several decades due to loss of suitable habitat across much of the state. Similarly, despite restoring Eastern Wild Turkey populations to their peak across Arkansas by the early 2000s, there appears to have been a steady decline in turkey populations as indicated by declining harvests since 2003. Despite wild turkeys being a generalist species, they require similar habitats for nesting and brood rearing that Northern Bobwhite Quail require for much of their life history needs. Arkansas Game & Fish Commission biologists Jeremy Wood and Marcus Asher will discuss some of the reasons they suspect both of these populations have declined in Arkansas, what they are doing to reverse these trends, and how individuals can help monitor both of these populations and help inform future management.
