I received a great question today that I wanted to share with you, because I know this is something that might be on your mind. The question is, “How can I increase my vocal range?” or “How can I extend my vocal range?”

This is a wonderful question. Especially if you are a singer that really wants to experience a wide variety of musical stylings and musical choices. Today’s music is super versatile. Artists use a mix of really great dark deep lows and some really wonderful free-floating highs. If you want to be able to do a little bit of both, then this video blog post is just for you. Today we are going to talk about how to increase your vocal range.

How to increase my vocal range
Let’s talk about vocal range for a moment. There are three coordinations that I want to go over today. These three must be in balance in order for you to increase your vocal range.

1. Relaxation
2. Resonance
3. Vocal cord coordination

In the video above, I’m going to give you some simple sounds to play with these three coordinations. These are not elaborate vocal exercises. They are just simple sounds that you can use on your own. They are proven to help increase your vocal range.

Relaxation
Let's talk about the first of the three coordinations that will help increase your vocal range, Relaxation. A lot of times of singers will try to reach for a high note. What happens is that the muscles in the tongue, the jaw and the throat will feel all kinds of tension in order to reach for that high note. We want to work around this by simply staying very very very still. We want to use a sigh to get up and over the place with that attention may occur. We just want to gently move the sound forward. You want to imagine that your sound can get up and over the jaw, into the head space, and out in front of you.

This is going to reprogram the body to associate release with a high sound. When you do the sigh exercise, stay focused on how relaxed you can be. You can do a wide variety of pitches if you can maintain absolute stillness in your jaw, your larynx, and your tongue while sighing.

Resonance
Now let’s move on to the second of the three coordinations that will help increase your vocal range. Here we want to play with Resonance by using an NG sound, like we’re saying the word “song” or “sing”. The back of your tongue is going to lift and touch the soft palate. The tip of the tongue is just going to stay resting against the bottom teeth. This is really going to focus your resonance into the nose space. You might feel a little bit of pressure inside there.

This exercise is so amazing because it removes a lot of the pressure from the neck and throat by removing the mouth as a resonator. If you feel pinching in the throat, go back and relax. Then try the NG at a later time.

After you have the NG really helping your resonance into the nose space, go from an NG sigh to dropping the tongue. The sigh will carry your sound forward by using a combination of residence spaces. By keeping your sigh consistent, you will gradually blend both of those registers.

Vocal Cord Coordination
The last of the three coordinations that will help increase your vocal range is Vocal Cord Coordination. This will help you specifically if you are experiencing a really crazy break as your sound enters your headier quality. If you experience that, vocal words are actually breaking apart on the top. A good way to work with that is to do a crazy laugh at a higher pitch. Go ahead and give it a try. You are coordinating your vocal cords really rapidly at a high pitch, which is going to remove a lot of the squeeze. Play with different pitches for a better sound. Try to laugh and then coordinate the pitch. This is a wonderful way to train your vocal cords to coordinate at higher pitches without squeezing.
