'Frankenstein' opioids on streets, much stronger than Fentanyl

Last month we told you about a new drug that’s sweeping the country called tranq, or the zombie drug.

It's a veterinary sedative that when mixed with fentanyl gives users a zombie-like appearance and can even cause their flesh to rot to the bone.

Now there is a new group of drugs and they're just as terrifying.

On the street, they are referred to as Frankenstein opioids. Myrtle Beach’s Opioid Program Coordinator says that they were never meant to be on our streets.

“Nitazines are a powerful group of illicit opioids. Basically, they were created about 60 years ago as a potential pain reliever medication. However, they were never approved for use within the United States,” said Opioid Program Coordinator Michelle Smith.

There are several different Nitazine compounds.

This means that there are multiple possibilities and combinations for the drugs.

It can be anywhere from two to 40 times more potent than fentanyl.
