INSIGHT OF HEMORRHOIDS OR PILES - CAUSES, CARE, CONCERN, CURE, COST AND COMPILATION 20 अप्रैल 2026

India has an estimated 40 million patients suffering from piles or hemorrhoids. Each year, at least a million new cases are recorded, making it one of the most common health conditions. About two decades back, the disease used to be called as a disease of the elderly.
However, the recent trend shows a different outlook to this disease where a very younger age group of 18 to 25 years of age population is found suffering from the symptoms and manifestations of haemorrhoids.
But why exactly is piles getting commoner at such young age? To understand the high rates of incidence, we need to take a closer look at the causes.
“Piles is a growing problem because of dietary & lifestyle factors, including our reliance on low-fiber processed foods & a sedentary lifestyle that increases obesity”
Piles or hemorrhoids develops around the anus, involving swelling or inflammation of the veins, within or just outside the anus. The condition causes severe pain and irritation, making it difficult to even sit down. The incidence of this condition has risen dramatically in India because of our changing lifestyle and diet. This becomes most apparent from the causes.
Constipation
“Frequent, chronic, or severe constipation increases the risk of hemorrhoids, as it causes swelling of the veins & weakening of the anal muscles”
Due to inadequate intake of dietary fiber from fruits, veggies, and whole grains, coupled with excessive consumption of processed foods, constipation is almost endemic in India today. This causes straining and increases pressure on the rectal veins and arteries.
Frequent, chronic, or severe constipation therefore increases the risk of hemorrhoids, as it causes swelling of the veins and weakening of the anal muscles.
Diarrhea
“Frequent or long lasting diarrhea can cause painful hemorrhoids because of strain on the anal muscles”
Diarrhea may not be as common as constipation, but it is a common problem because of poor hygiene and unhealthy food choices. Unfortunately, diarrhea also puts considerable strain on the anal muscles, including the likelihood of painful hemorrhoids.
Sitting
“Spending long hours seated increases pressure on the hemorrhoidal veins, causing inflammation”
We’ve seen the reports on increased lifestyle disease risks from sitting excessively, but most of us don’t realize that being seated for long hours also contributes to the onset of piles. Being seated for long periods puts excessive pressure on the hemorrhoidal veins, causing them to get inflamed.
For the same reason, you should avoid spending too much time on the toilet seat, even though it may be your favorite place to catch up on the reading. Spending most of your day standing isn’t much of an option either, as this can cause blood to collect in the anal area, increasing pressure on the veins. Instead, keep changing posture.
Obesity
“Obesity is one of the major risk factors for piles because of the huge pressure that fat buildup puts on the veins of the anus”
As you probably already know, obesity increases the risk of almost every disease, piles included. There is a high risk of piles when you are overweight because the excess weight exerts considerable pressure on the veins of the anus. The problem is generally exacerbated because obesity is usually associated with low fiber diets and inadequate fluid intake.
How To Deal With Piles At Home
Fortunately, hemorrhoids is completely treatable, but it requires changes to your diet and lifestyle. Here are some tips to deal with piles effectively.
Fiber Supplements: Increase your fiber intake by eating more fresh fruits, veggies, and whole grains. This helps soften stools, easing passage and reducing straining. If your dietary fiber intake is still inadequate, you can also use fiber supplements like psyllium husk.
Hemorrhoids Creams: Ointments for piles are available over the counter at almost all medical stores and are extremely effective at relieving and treating the condition. These creams help by reducing inflammation and sometimes by numbing the area to increase ease in passage of stools.
Anal Hygiene: The area around the anus is likely to be extremely sensitive to touch, but it is important that you keep it clean by showering daily. Do not attempt to rub or massage the area while bathing, or when drying after a bath. Also avoid using alcohol-based or perfumed wipes, as this can irritate the hemorrhoids.
Our Take
Although piles can be treated at home, severe cases, such as with bleeding hemorrhoids, may require medical attention. If your problem does not respond to home treatments, make sure to consult your doctor as soon as possible. Most importantly, to deal with piles for good, you need to make lifestyle changes to increase physical activity and dietary fiber intake permanently.
