Rugby is a sport that originated in England in the early 19th century. It is said to have begun at Rugby School in 1823 when a student, William Webb Ellis, allegedly picked up the ball during a game of football (soccer) and ran with it, creating the foundation of the game. The first set of formal rules was established in 1845 at Rugby School, and the sport soon spread to other countries.
Rugby split into two major forms: Rugby Union and Rugby League. Rugby Union is the more traditional version, with 15 players per side, while Rugby League has 13 players per team and is faster-paced. The Rugby World Cup is one of the most prestigious tournaments, first held in 1987.
Basic Rules: Rugby is played with an oval-shaped ball and involves two teams competing to score by either carrying, passing, or kicking the ball over the opposing team’s try line. Points can be scored in several ways: a try (5 points), a conversion (2 points), a penalty (3 points), and a drop goal (3 points). The game is played in two 40-minute halves, and players are not allowed to pass the ball forward. Tackling is a key part of the game, but it must be done below the shoulders.
