Container Gardening: Planting Sweet Potatoes in a Bucket

Want to grow sweet potatoes but have limited space or maybe you don’t want them to take over your yard for years? It is is possible to grow sweet potatoes in large containers or buckets. Watch as I quickly plant sweet potato slips in a large bucket in my zone 11 kitchen garden. It was HOT, but I got it done!

Things to remember:
-Plant sweet potato slips, not whole sweet potatoes.
-Have a sunny spot! Sweet potatoes actually like heat and should do well in zone 11 over the summer.
-Give them space! Sweet potato vines grow long, so they need space to sprawl. Either give them ground space, or a trellis. They will need to be tied to a trellis; they wont climb on their own.
-Sweet potato vines are edible.
-More slips can be produced from the vine.

While doing research, I even found people who have grown them in cardboard boxes. Just remember sweet potatoes come from slips, not potatoes.

Supplies:
-Sweet potato slips
-Bucket
-Potting mix (store bought or make your own)
-Blood meal
-Bone meal
-Water
-Sunny spot
