As a beginner, the songwriting and lyric writing process can seem like such a mysterious process. But why? well, one of the biggest reasons is by the time you have decided to start writing songs and lyrics you'll have been a fan of music for some time. You maybe even have learned to play an instrument and a bunch of songs. So without realizing it, you have acquired a certain standard in your taste for music. This is great, but as a complete beginner, there is a big gap between your taste and your skill level. So you start to write some songs and lyrics, and guess what? you aren't as brilliant as your favorite artists straight away. As humans our first thought isn't, well that's to be expected. No, it's more like...I suck at this! And you are probably right. Just like the first time you tried to walk, just like the first time you tried to say words...just like the first time you did anything. You see, songwriting, lyric writing, playing an instrument is a learned skill. No one is born with the ability to write great lyrics or songs. I created this video and its accompanying cheat sheet for people just starting out on their lyric writing journey. When I started out writing lyrics, the hardest part wasn't coming up with ideas it was having enough to say about those ideas to finish a song and not stray off the topic I started writing about. In this video, I give you a simple process that helps you find ideas, flesh them out, and organize that content into a finished lyric. Song and lyric writing are magical, but it isn't magic. Once you understand a few fundamental concepts, a lot of the process will just fall into place.
