This is Utah's island in the Great Salt Lake
Frary Peak is one of my favorite climbs in Utah in the winter- It is so spectacular and breath taking.
Hiking to the Top of Frary Peak – Antelope Island, Great Salt Lake:
Frary Peak (6,596 ft) is the highest point on Antelope Island, offering panoramic views of the Great Salt Lake, Wasatch Mountains, and surrounding desert landscape. The hike is a moderately challenging trek with steady elevation gain, some rocky sections, and a final steep push to the summit.
Trail Overview
🔹 Trailhead: Frary Peak Trailhead (Antelope Island State Park)
🔹 Distance (Round Trip): 6.9 miles
🔹 Elevation Gain: 2,100 ft
🔹 Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous
🔹 Time Estimate: 3-5 hours round trip
🔹 Best Season: Spring & Fall (summers can be extremely hot)
Step-by-Step Hiking Directions
Step 1: Trailhead to the Ridge (~2.5 miles, 1,500 ft gain)
Start at the Frary Peak Trailhead, located along the east side of the island.
The well-maintained trail switchbacks up the eastern slopes, providing early views of the Great Salt Lake and surrounding desert.
Around mile 2, you’ll reach a ridge where the trail briefly levels out, allowing a chance to catch your breath.
Step 2: Final Push to Frary Peak (~1 mile, 600 ft gain)
The last mile to the summit is rockier and steeper than the lower trail.
The trail navigates through some boulder sections before reaching the false summit.
From the false summit, a short, narrow ridge leads to the true summit of Frary Peak (6,596 ft).
Enjoy 360° panoramic views—on a clear day, you can see the Wasatch Mountains, Great Salt Lake, and distant deserts of western Utah.
Step 3: Descent (Retrace Your Steps, ~3.5 miles down)
Carefully descend the steep rocky section near the summit.
Follow the same trail back down, watching for loose gravel.
Return to the Frary Peak Trailhead.
Key Considerations
⚠️ Heat & Sun Exposure: No shade—bring plenty of water (2-3L) & sunscreen. and really cold and windy in the winter.
⚠️ Biting Gnats & Bugs: Spring & early summer can have biting gnats—wear bug spray.
⚠️ Trail Conditions: Rocky near the top—watch footing.
⚠️ Wildlife: Bison, antelope, and bighorn sheep are common—give them space.
Recommended Gear
✅ Hiking Boots or Trail Shoes (good traction for rocky sections)
✅ 2-3L of Water (No water sources on trail)
✅ Sunscreen, Hat & Sunglasses (No shade)
✅ Trekking Poles (Optional) (Helpful on the descent)
✅ Bug Spray (Spring & Summer)
