Odd meters can feel like Rhythm Jail. Or Rhythm Groundhog Day. Or...choose your analogy.

The point is, they can be restrictive. When we play in 2, 4, or 6, we have FREEDOM. But odd meters "hem us in" to the almighty barline.

How come odd-meter greats like Vinnie/Bozzio/Dennis/Marcus et al can play them without issue?

It starts with being able to keep the primary meter in your head while you play something against it. It will both strengthen your ability to keep the "1" in your head, and also give you cool phrasing ideas that will allow you to BUST out of the barline.

Check it out.
