ISO in photography is a camera setting that controls how sensitive the camera's sensor is to light.

Think of it as the sensor's "light amplification" level.

How it works
When you increase ISO, you tell the camera to amplify the signal it gets from light, making the image brighter without needing a longer shutter speed or wider aperture.

The exposure triangle
ISO is one of three core settings that determine exposure, along with:

1. Shutter speed: How long the sensor collects light 2. Aperture: How much light the lens lets in 3. ISO: How much the camera amplifies that light
Raise ISO when you need a faster shutter speed or smaller aperture but don't have enough light.

The downside: noise
Higher ISO = more digital noise or "grain". This looks like speckles and color blotches, and it reduces sharpness and dynamic range. Modern cameras handle high ISO much better than older ones.

Quick rule of thumb
Keep ISO as low as possible for the situation. Only raise it when you can't get a bright enough photo with shutter speed and aperture alone without causing blur or other problems.
