Tourist In Your Own Town #16: National Museum of the American Indian / U.S. Custom House

The U.S. Custom House is 1907 Beaux Arts masterpiece that was designed by the great Cass Gilbert and features a three story oval rotunda decorated with murals from New York artist Reginald Marsh. Inside, you will find the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. The museum holds one of the most extensive collections of Native American arts and artifacts in the world and regularly presents contemporary Native American artists with a variety of programs.

The Custom House was one of the earliest designations of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976.
