1995 Ford F-250 4X4 Automatic to Manual Hub Conversion

This 1995 Ford F-250's automatic locking hubs have failed at some point. Rather than attempt to fix them, I perform an automatic to manual hub conversion. The hubs I chose are the Mile Marker 449SS manual hubs. These hubs sport a polished stainless steel outer covering and for added durability, cast iron internals. They also appear easy to rebuild should the need arise. Also, I think they look very good for this truck, especially against these particular type of aluminum wheels.

Since during the conversion, the outer wheel bearing locknut has to be removed (disturbing its adjustment) I decided to take the opportunity to repack both outer and inner wheel bearings and replace the wheel seals. I'm glad I did this since upon closer examination, the wheel bearings appear to have never been repacked and the wheel seal on the passenger side was completely destroyed. Because of this, some minor corrosion had developed on the spindle and seal surface. To protect these surfaces, I put a light coating of grease on them. An off-road test confirms that all four wheels are driving since I can feel the front end trying to pull me along. This truck is once again, a 4X4. (1/18/2014)
