Gothing While Black

A few weeks ago, one of my subscribers asked me to talk about my life as a black goth - what growing up was like, how I was treated by friends and family, and how the world perceived me. I've spoken about this topic before, but I felt like now was a good time to bring it up again.

People in alternative communities pride themselves on being accepting and more open-minded than the mainstream, while turning a blind eye to the very real discrimination within our own scenes. I've lost count of the number of times I've called attention to this only to be shut down again and again by people who refuse to believe that anything is wrong...because that would mean they would have to take a good, hard look at themselves and the people around them, and realize that maybe they weren't as progressive as they thought they were.

Actions speak far louder than words. Anyone can use a hashtag to pretend that they care while being silent (complicit) in the discrimination against not only black people, but all people of colour, in the alternative scene. You don't get to co-opt the punk aesthetic while ignoring what it stands for.

Support alternative black artists, creators, and influencers.
