Steam Railway on way to Attock Khurd from Peshawar

Aboard a vintage Steam Railway (built 1916) on way to Attock Khurd from Peshawar. From 1925 onwards this train ran regularly between Peshawar and Landi Kotal in Khyber Pass near the border of Afghanistan. Now it is used mainly as a tourist-only train. It was featured on the cover of TIME magazine some years back. TIME included it in the world's Top 10 Train Travels and this engine's photo was chosen for cover. Pakistan Railways granted me my wish and I was allowed to travel with the rail crew in the steam engine. If you're wondering what the co-driver is handing to the boy on the station, it is a "ball key" wrapped in a leather case and hitched on a metal ring. You can see it being passed to the station manager. It was a 100% fool proof mechanism to prevent train accidents, which is still in use on this train. The ball will mechanically unlock and clear the track further up once the station manager physically puts it in a slot in his office . With my usual curiosity, in the next scene I moved to the front of the engine! "Lucky we did not hit any cows today eh. It can happen, and its not a pretty sight" the train guard later remarked (!!). We stopped at Attock Khurd Station. In the final scene I was taken around in a railway inspection car/trolley over the historic Attock Bridge and then a mile further and shown some great British-era tunnels. Awesome! One of the tunnels is called Aornos, named after the site of Alexander the Great's final siege near Swat before he overran the plains of India. (Ali Jan)
