The Lake Mead B-29

On July 21, 1948, a modified B-29 Superfortress engaged in high-altitude atmospheric research crashed into Lake Mead. When the plane hit the lake, three of the four engines tore off. The five-member crew survived. The plane has remained in the depths of the lake for 70 years.

The Air Force initially recommended the plane for salvage, but that recommendation was canceled. As an agency dedicated to the preservation of America’s resources, the National Park Service serves as the custodian of the Lake Mead B-29.
