Population Density of Indian States How Crowded Is India?

What is population density?

Population density measures how many people live in one square kilometer of land. It helps us understand how crowded or spacious a region is.

High population density—especially above 800 people/km²—can lead to urban stress, traffic, pollution, and strain on resources. Low density, on the other hand, might mean better space but can lack infrastructure or connectivity. Urban areas like Delhi and Chandigarh show extremely high densities, while states like Arunachal Pradesh remain wide and sparsely populated.

So, how much is too much?

Below 300/km²: Low (spacious)

300–500/km²: Moderate

800+/km²: High (potentially overcrowded)
