It's Not TMI: Episode 4-How Should I Wash My Vulva for Optimal Hygiene?

This is an educational video about vulvar care and hygiene and overall pelvic floor health.

Did you know that your vagina is a self-cleaning oven and washing with harsh soaps can decrease the good bacteria needed for pelvic health? Cleaning the vagina and vulva (external genitalia) with harsh soaps and douches can contribute to yeast infections, urinary tract infections and vulvodynia (pain in the vulva). Warm water is all you need.

Some tips for vagina and vulvar care;

• Always wipe from front to back
• Wear cotton underwear and sleep in the nude if possible
• Avoid washing with soaps and shampoos (warm water is all you need)
• Avoid wearing pantyhose
• If using personal lubricant, ensure it is natural and free-from parabens, preservatives and alcohols
• Use scent and color-free toilet paper
• Remove wet clothing and swimwear immediately following use
• Avoid irritants (scented lotions, deodorants, vaginal wipes)
