Our guest today is multi-talented Matthew Cobb - a Professor of Zoology and published Historian. Matthew has written two books about the French Resistance and we are delighted he is joining us to talk about this fascinating subject.

The French resistance to Nazi occupation during the Second World War was a struggle in which ordinary people fought for their liberty, despite terrible odds and horrifying repression. Hundreds of thousands of Frenchmen and women carried out an armed struggle against the Nazis, producing underground anti-fascist publications and supplying the Allies with vital intelligence.

Matthew will explain who the various different groups were in France and talk about some of the heroes within them. Who were the Francs-Tireurs et Partisans (FTP), the Armée secrète (AS); "Secret Army" in English) and the Organisation de résistance de l'armée (ORA)?
