Escape From Sabah

We’ve heard the stories time and time again: people forced to make a choice between staying in their hometown where there is very little economic opportunity, and leaving family to make money elsewhere.

Across Asia, countless people have faced this decision, and often decide that supporting the family from abroad is the best option. This is especially the case in the Philippines, where one of the biggest contributors to the economy is through remittances – money sent home by Filipinos working outside the country.

On this special episode of Assignment Asia, CCTV’s Barnaby Lo follows one woman, Sam, as she travels from Sabah, Malaysia back home to the southern Philippines – an emotional journey that, she says, will be her last.
