Update for May 2021:
Dear friends and our youtube channel followers, a lot of water has flown under the bridge since this last video and if you watched the video carefully i constantly express how this is a constant learning process and how i keep on improving on my skills and technique as i learn more about myself and the process of grafting. I have made a few changes with time, and this is because we all want to be environmentally friendly and frugal so we use only the essential products, spending least amount of money, and some changes based on our microclimate here in South Florida.
1. First change was to switch from electric tape to reusable clothespins to hold the union together. Found out that electric tape makes a wet, humid environment because it does not allow the tissue to breathe. Plus, clothespins can be re-used again so they are more environmentally friendly compared to electric tape which is a one time use. I use clothespin over the layer of buddy tape which is wrapped securely over the union. I use 3-4 clothespins stacking one over another.
2. Second change is about the plastic cover on top. I do not do this in drier months like April, May, October, November. But in June, July and August it is very rainy here in South Florida and i need to protect union from rain water seepage. I remove the plastic cover after 3 weeks, esp. after the scion starts to push. The plastic cover can be reused and you can use any plastic that came with your groceries instead of discarding it, and recycle it in special plastic recyclers after (like the bins in Home Depot or Publix). Plastic cover does not burn the scion, many people showed concern but it doesn't work this way even in the hottest months if you leave a small opening at the bottom for air circulation, so no greenhouse effect.
3. I tried putting tree grafting wax to cover the union. It seems to work great for arid climates but here in Florida it was a disaster :)

In this video, i want to show you 5 mistakes i made while learning how to graft. I watched tons of youtube videos on grafting and felt like i was doing all the steps correctly, using all the equipments as suggested by the grafting gurus but still had only 5-10% takes on my grafts. Then i started experimenting and changing small subtle things in my grafting and started to see my takes go up to 50%, and then to 70- 80%. So I decided to share my experience with you guys, the 5 crucial mistakes i made and how i corrected them to get better success rates. It helped me get out of the failure frustration that a beginner grafter gets, and inspiration to get going. Once someone is adept at grafting, every technique and grafting process seems to work well, and these 5 mistakes will not mean much, so this video is not intended for the grafting pros. It is intended to inspire new grafters to experiment with their technique, to see what works for them and in their specific climate/growing zone, as every place and everyone's technique is unique, and one will eventually have their own technique that works.
