"Fatal Mistakes" The story of Robert Marshall's conviction - Full Version

In 2003, we became the first video taped interview that Robert Marshall consented to in his 18 years on death row at NJ's Trenton State Prison. Furthermore, we are the first student group to interview a death row inmate in the history of the prison!
We were a team of TV documentary students from Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey, USA with the mission of presenting the case of Robert Marshall with an objective view point. It is for you, the viewer, to decide what you believe happened that night.

SYNOPSIS:
"Fatal Mistakes" revisits a sensational murder in Toms River, New Jersey 18 years after it happened. Robert Marshall was convicted of conspiring to murder his wife at a Garden State Parkway rest area in 1984. He sits on death row at Trenton State Prison since 1986.

But did he do it? Did he hire someone to murder his wife? Or was he framed by a sleezy Louisiana mob-ring?

This documentary follows the trail of the original crime and interviews all of the major players involved in the investigation. The highlight is an interview with Robert Marshall, himself, at Trenton State Prison.

HIGHLIGHTS & UPDATES:
We became the first video taped interview that Marshall consented to in his 18 years in Trenton State Prison. Furthermore, we were the first student group to interview a death row inmate in the history of Trenton State Prison.

We also interviewed Marshall's youngest son John (the only of 3 whom maintains the innocence of his father), the original defense attorney Glen Zeitz, the state investigator first on the scene James Churchill, original prosecutor Kevin Kelly, and Juror #2 William Robinson, to name a few (and include clips from family home videos).

Our documentary "Fatal Mistakes" was released in 2003, at the same time that Marshall was appealing for his death sentence to be overturned. Thus, the state subpoenaed us for our interview tapes. Luckily the ACLU intervened and took on our case pro bono, defending that were acting as journalists. We won our case, were able to keep our interview tapes, and a press conference was held in our honor.

In 2006, a judge re-sentenced Marshall to life in prison, citing difficulties in presenting evidence over 20 years after the crime. He had been New Jersey's longest-serving death row inmate since it was reinstated in 1982. (No one had actually been executed since 1963.) He died in prison on Feb 21, 2015, just over a month before he would have been eligible for parole.

ACCOLADES:
In the years following the release of "Fatal Mistakes," it has won several festival awards and has been mentioned in numerous news articles and reports, including:

- Gracie Allen Award for best student documentary 31-59 minutes.

- Golden Eagle Award for best student documentary

- 1st Place at NJ Film & Video Festival for best long-format student documentary.
