I drove through Downtown Savannah, Georgia on a Beautiful Evening
Savannah might be the prettiest downtown in the nation!
For this video, I took Route 17 South from South Carolina and crossed over the Savannah River into downtown Savannah, Georgia, one of the prettiest and most historical cities in the entire country, and certainly one of the finest cities in the south. The goal was to record the best parts of downtown Savannah, and to showcase some historical neighborhoods. It was a pretty day - around 58 degrees. It was Monday, January 4, 2021, and it was getting close to dusk - at around 4 pm.
Savannah was established way back in 1773, and back then it was the state capital. It served as a middle ground between the deep south and the Carolinas, and was used as a buffer to protect the Carolinas from Spanish Florida and French Louisiana.
Tons of people come from all over to check out the history here. Downtown Savannah has one of the largest national historical landmark districts in the nation. More than 40% of buildings inventoried in Savannah have architectural or historical significance. Some say Savannah is the most important architectural city in the nation.
The city was originally designed with six interconnected wards, all built around central squares, which you’ll see throughout the tour of downtown. The way they laid out the city is very rhythmic, and there are lots of layers and tons of details. You could do a whole video on the different architectural styles found in downtown Savannah. Georgian, Gothic Revival, Greek Revival and a modern style permeate the greater downtown area.
I found downtown Savannah to be very clean. In fact, while walking around at night, I wandered into one of the city’s 22 squares. It was flawless. There wasn’t a single homeless person or panhandler in sight, which is very rare in central gathering points in today’s modern American cities. The only trash I saw happened to be discarded pandemic masks. There were actually quite a few of them lying about.
Here’s what Savannah’s Bank of America looks like. Here’s an example of one of its downtown churches. Both are really wonderful to look at.
This is Broughton St which serves as Savannah’s main commercial corridors. While exploring downtown, I happened across a retail outlet which embodies today’s southern style. I liked this outfit in particular. And for youth, there’s this hip, handsome ensemble.
This is East River Street, another historical part of downtown Savannah. It lies on the banks of the Savannah River. This was originally home to cotton warehouses. Now, it’s filled with boutique shopping, artist studios, galleries, pubs and restaurants.
While out on my nightly adventure here, I ate at Tubby’s. I enjoyed the best cheesy grits I’ve ever had, they were perfectly cheesy. And the hush puppies were the softest hush puppies I ever tasted. You never know what boats you’ll see passing by here.
