Nelson Mandela Foundation vs Afriforum: Ernst Roets
The Nelson Mandela Foundation has told the Equality Court sitting in Johannesburg that displaying the old South African flag, the flag of the Apartheid government, should be declared hate speech.
The foundation says that the flag is a symbol of racism and prejudice, and is a reminder of how white people treated black people during Apartheid. But the organisation Afriforum says that banning displays of the flag in this way would amount to ban on the flag itself.
It says that banning the flag would infringe on the Constitutional right to freedom of expression. Ernst Roets is Afriforum's deputy CEO and joins us.
