Most Dog Owners Handle Food Aggression WRONG

People tend to make a bigger deal out of food bowl aggression than necessary.

If your dog is showing signs of defending their food bowl, here are three options to consider:

1. Hand-feed and train around meals
This removes the conflict around the bowl, increases engagement, builds trust, and gives you more opportunities to train.

2. Hold the bowl while your dog eats
This can be a bridge to help your dog get comfortable with you being near their food.

Important: Don’t mess with the food while holding the bowl. Don’t take the bowl away while your dog is eating. The goal is for your dog to learn that your presence does not mean the food is being taken.

3. Feed your dog in a separate, peaceful space
This removes the danger, prevents your dog from practicing the guarding behavior, and allows them to relax and eat without conflict.

If your dog is showing severe aggression, use caution with option 2 and focus on options 1 and 3 instead.

The goal isn’t to “dominate” the dog around food.
The goal is to reduce conflict, build trust, and stop rehearsing the behavior.
