HOW TO BUILD A BIOACTIVE BALL PYTHON VIVARIUM

In this video, you'll learn how to build a bioactive vivarium for a ball python! I go over the 11-step process I followed to build the vivarium for my ball python Louis! I loved creating this enriching environment for him, and he has been exploring every corner! I hope this tutorial will be helpful to someone. Also, I am by no means an expert in this field, but I have spent the last six months documenting myself through various articles and videos. So I thought I would film the process and share what I learned. Let me know what you think in the comments. :-)

Do you want a ball python? Another pet reptile?

Video Chapters:
00:00 - Intro
1:07 - Step One: Disinfecting
1:46 - Step Two: Sealing The Vivarium
2:59 - Step Three: Making The Background
5:22 - Step Four: Carving
6:17 - Step Five: Covering The Background
8:52 - Step Six: Plastic Layer
9:13 - Step Seven: Drainage Layer
9:57 - Step Eight: Barrier Layer
10:45 - Step Nine: Substrate
11:45 - Step Ten: Plants
15:49 - Step Eleven: Leaf Litter & Insects

Here is a list of the supplies I used in the tank:
- Wood Sealant: Biopin Beeswax & Vegetable Oil Wood Sealant (Swiss German brand)
- Extra Protection: Plastic Sheet Layer
- Silicon: Aquarium-Grade Silicon
- Drainage Layer: Hydro Clay Pebbles
- Barrier Layer: Landscaping Fabric
- Substrate: Profi-Substrate (the soil like substrate), Eco-Earth, and Forest Floor
- Background: Eco-Earth and coconut husk
- Heating Elements: Exo Terra ceramic heater + two Exo Terra heat mats
- Lighting: Exo Terra Natural Light 14W T8 Tube light (it's been working great for the plants), I'm also using the Exo Terra Full Moon Light which has been so nice. It gives off a beautiful, subtle, moon-like glow and allows me to watch him when he's most active.
- Plants: Pothos, Monstera Minima, Calthea Ornata Prayer Plant, Ctenanthe burle-marxii (my Chinese hibiscus died, as I predicted, as well as my fasciated haworthia plant because I placed it too close to the heater...whoops!)
- Insects: Isopods, Springtails, Silverfish
- Humidifier: Random humidifier from Amazon that works super well

The vivarium is controlled by two thermostats. The warm side stays around 30°C. Because the vivarium is quite tall, I included heat mats under the warm side of his hide and it maintains a perfect temperature. He has a basking spot of 34°C if he chooses to sit on top of his warm hide. The ambient temperature stays around 25°C-28°C and his cool hide stays around 25°C.

Here is a great tutorial of how to do the entire background with expanding foam/great vivarium tutorial:

Also, I came across this video and his vivarium is one of the most beautiful I've seen. He's built this vivarium for his 23-year-old ball python and has inspired me to start building a second level of hides for Louis and also to try to grow many more species of plants/have vines covering the wall! I don't know how he did it but it is so magical. Check it out:

It's been four months since I got my pet snake Louis and he seems to be enjoying the entire vivarium; the plants continue to grow and the insects continue to multiply. I can't wait to keep working on this vivarium to make it better and better. :-)
