Yo-Yo Ma, Carlos Prieto & Brasil Guitar Duo: World Premiere of "El arco y la lira" in Havana, Cuba

In Havana, Cuba, on October 11, YO-YO MA and CARLOS PRIETO joined with BRASIL GUITAR DUO in the world premiere of El arco y la lira, a new work for two cellos and two guitars by the eminent Cuban composer and guitarist Leo Brouwer. Performed to a full house, and greeted with a four-minute standing ovation, at Havana's historic Teatro Martí, it concluded the penultimate concert of Festival Leo Brouwer, a two-week chamber-music festival featuring such international stars as Ma, Prieto, Jordi Saval, Fito Páez, Cuarteto Latinomericano, and Chucho Valdés.

Opening that concert was the world premiere of a new work for solo guitar by Brouwer, performed by the Spanish guitarist Ricardo Guillén. BRASIL GUITAR DUO followed Guillén with the Cuban premiere of Brouwer's 2009 composition Sonata de los viajeros for two guitars. Another highlight of the concert was the first Cuban performance, by Ma and Prieto, of Samuel Zyman's 1999 Suite para dos violoncellos.
Cuban critic Yeneily García García, writing for CubaSi.cu, hailed the premiere of El arco y la lira by Ma, Prieto, and the guitar duo as “an electrifying performance.”
