Socket Shield Technique #implantology #drteeth
In the socket shield technique, a portion of the tooth root is kept intact while the rest is removed. This preserves the periodontium, bundle bone, and buccal bone. After numbing the area, a horizontal cut is made at the level of the bone. The root length is measured using radiography, and the tooth is split into buccal and palatal halves. The buccal part is reshaped to create a shield about 1.5–2 mm wide, trimmed to bone level, and given a bevel or S-shaped profile on the inner side. There should be at least 1.5 mm space between the shield and the implant, with bone grafting recommended if the gap is over 3 mm, though its necessity is debated. A provisional crown or customized healing abutment can be placed immediately after implant placement to maintain soft-tissue contours.
