Jane wants to play football but since there is no girls team, then boys� football it is. The Shep doesn�t like the idea one bit, but once Jane proves she�s faster, stronger, and more athletic than most of the team, he relents� with a warning: she�ll be treated like every other player. The guys on the team razz Jane, but she deflects their jabs playfully, determined to be a part of the team. During the final moments of Degrassi�s first-ever football game, Jane is not protected by her team, gets hit, fumbles the ball and costs them the win. Jane weathers the relentless harassment to stick with the team, but when an altercation between Jane and Derek turns violent, Jane finds herself on the losing end of the fight. What�s worse, The Shep chalks it up to boys being boys. Jane must decide if playing a sport she loves is worth the constant struggle against this entrenched misogyny. Jane knows she can play football with the best, but can she win the hearts and minds of her teammates in this battle to belong?

Season 8 of Degrassi: The Next Generation continues to explore provocative territory for young adults grappling with “first” experiences. Last year, chaos reigned as students from rival school Lakehurst were forced into the halls of Degrassi, but Lakehurst’s contribution this year is worse – its principal, “The Shep” is especially hard on Degrassi’s newest students, a gifted grade nine class. As the grade nines explore their new surroundings, so do Smithdale University freshmen Emma, Liberty, and Manny.
