In this video, we explain the basics of semic onductors, PN junction diode, and rectifiers in a simple and student-friendly way.

Semiconductors are materials whose electrical conductivity lies between conductors and insulators. Their conductivity can be controlled by adding impurities, a process called doping. The two main types of semiconductors are N-type (with excess electrons) and P-type (with excess holes). Semiconductors form the foundation of modern electronic devices such as diodes, transistors, and integrated circuits.

A PN junction diode is formed by joining P-type and N-type semiconductors. It allows current to flow in only one direction. When connected in forward bias, the diode conducts electricity, and in reverse bias it blocks current. Because of this one-way conduction property, PN junction diodes are widely used in rectifiers, switches, and electronic circuits.

Rectifiers are circuits that convert alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC). A half wave rectifier uses a single diode and converts only one half of the AC cycle into DC, so the output is pulsating and less efficient. A full wave rectifier uses two or four diodes and converts both halves of the AC cycle into DC, giving a smoother and more efficient output. Rectifiers are used in power supplies, chargers, and many electronic devices.
