Dental implants and reconstructions: everything in ceramics or as far as we can go to being metal free.
The long-term high survival and success rates of titanium dental implants and conventional restorative materials (e.g. PFM Crowns, metal reinforce bridges, metal abutments) expanded the treatment options in reconstructive dentistry over the past decades In fact biological and esthetic demands from patients and clinicians have initiated the development metal-free reconstruction on the level of the implant and the level of the reconstruction itself. While all-ceramic reconstructions of crowns, bridges and abutments are clinical widely accepted, all-ceramic implants are not a used on a routine basis in implant dentistry today.
Current scientific evidence suggests that the use of zirconia as implant, abutment and crown material offers a number of potential benefits. This includes high biocompatibility, pleasing esthetics and high acceptance by the patient.
On the abutment and crown level, excellent clinical data, including 5-year data, suggest that this material beats the current gold standard, metal-based reconstructions, with respect to biologic compatibility and esthetics, while offering comparable long-term data
Straumann recently introduced a tooth colored ceramic zirconia di-oxide implant with an SLA®-like microrough surface (ZLA™). First clinical evidence shows at least comparable clinical performance to established titanium implants.
The presentation will highlight the scientific data of dental ceramic materials used for crowns, abutments and implants and show new possibilities for metal-free solutions.
