How to STOP BLADDER FREQUENCY | Overactive Bladder 101

Stop urinary frequency and urgency with 3 key overactive bladder training steps guided by Physio Michelle from https://www.pelvicexercises.com.au This is essential knowledge to stop bladder urgency, leakage and visiting the bathroom too frequently. Michelle also shares her own bladder diary results and bladder frequency treatment plan.

The sensation of urinary urgency is caused by the bladder muscle contracting. Urinary urgency results when the bladder stretch receptors become more sensitive to bladder stretch. This causes the bladder to contract when it shouldn't when it contains a small amount of urine. This often causes urinary frequency and bladder leakage (urinary incontinence) as the bladder muscle squeezes and the bladder empties before it should.

3 Key Steps to Stop Urinary Urgency and Frequency

1. Hold off emptying your bladder to allow it to fill more if your urge isn't appropriate for example if it's less than 2 hours since you last emptied. Hold off for the length of time you can manage comfortably, everyone is different - some of us will be able to hold off for 6 seconds, others might be able to hold off emptying for 2-5 minutes. Try to hold off emptying your bladder gradually so that it starts to feel more comfortable when it's a little fuller. A common mistake when starting out is trying to hold off emptying your bladder for as long as you can. Doing this will upset your bladder sensors and make your urgency worse. Bladder training is a gradual process that teaches your bladder to gradually become accustomed to holding more urine.

2. Avoid emptying your bladder 'just in case' you think you might need to visit the bathroom. If you don't need to empty your bladder, then try not to empty for example before getting in the shower or before going out. Start with small challenges at home where it feels safe to do so and ask yourself if you really need to empty your bladder before doing so.

3. Gradually start to drink more water steadily though out the day if you're not drinking enough fluid. Healthy adults should drink around 6-8 glasses of fluids daily. Many people avoid drinking to reduce bladder urgency however doing this actually makes urgency and frequency worse.
