One of the most significant cremation sites in Nepal, the Arya Ghat, is situated beneath the Pashupatinath Temple.

Pashupatinath Temple or Pashupati Mandir (Nepali: पशुपतिनाथको मन्दिर) is one of the most important Hindu temples of Lord Shiva in the world. It is located on the banks of the Bagmati River in the eastern part of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. The temple serves as the seat of the national deity, Lord Pashupatinath. It is the oldest Hindu temple in Kathmandu. It's existence dates back to the year 400 A. D. however it is not exactly known when it was founded.

The Arya Ghat was formerly a cremation site reserved for the royal family and members of the higher castes. Nowadays it is also available for those who can afford the cremation costs. On special Hindu festivals (Magh Sankranti or Bala Chaturdashi), holidays or on syzygy days it is also a special place for ritual purification baths.

A few quiet minutes spent on the opposite river bank give the visitor a deep insight into the Hindu traditions. After a visit of this place for some the words "ashes to ashes" may get a new meaning.
