⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ MUNI Metro: Return of the J Church: LRV4 Trains in San Francisco

December 19, 2020, marked the first day since the August meltdown that light rail trains returned to serve San Francisco.

The catch is that as of the upload date of this video, only the J Church has resumed train service, and the underground portion of the line remains closed. Trains now terminate at Church and Duboce instead of continuing on through the Market Street subway.

Other lines are expected to get their trains back over the next couple months. So for now, our filming of light rail in the city can only consist of above-ground portions of the J.

SFMTA shut down light rail service in April due to the Coronavirus pandemic, replacing all trains with buses to reduce operating costs. The agency attempted to restart rail service with modifications in August, but major equipment problems and a positive COVID test within the operations control center prompted the agency to stop train service after just two days of operations.

The current reopening of the J may be the first time that Siemens LRV4 trains have composed the entire in-service fleet of the MUNI Metro. The older Breda cars are not in service right now, and will probably make up a minority of total trains running once all lines have begun train service.

We hope everyone is hanging in there and staying healthy!
