Glaucoma & Eye Pressure: The Hidden Risk to Your Vision

In this video, Dr. Sandhya, Senior Consultant for Glaucoma at Shekar Eye Hospital, explains the signs of high eye pressure and its connection to glaucoma.

Just like blood pressure exists in the body, there is eye pressure that helps maintain the shape of the eye. This pressure is controlled by a fluid called aqueous humour, which is constantly produced and drained in the eye. Any disruption in this drainage—whether mechanical or otherwise—can increase eye pressure, leading to glaucoma.

Glaucoma is a serious condition and the second leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. It has two main types: Open-Angle Glaucoma and Angle-Closure Glaucoma. Angle-closure glaucoma shows clear signs like severe eye redness, cloudy vision, inflammation, excessive watering, headaches, and seeing coloured halos. These symptoms require immediate attention from an ophthalmologist.

On the other hand, open-angle glaucoma is often called the "silent killer of sight" because it progresses without obvious symptoms. Common signs include frequent changes in prescription glasses and gradual loss of peripheral vision, especially in adults.

Children can also develop a severe form of the disease called congenital glaucoma. Signs include redness, excessive watering, avoiding sunlight, hiding their face, or the cornea turning white.

Regular eye examinations are crucial, especially for adults, to detect and manage glaucoma early. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and regular exercise can also help protect your vision.
