On Jeju island, off the coast of South Korea, the Haenyeo, or “sea women”, have long been an integral part of society. Tough and highly trained, these female free divers harvest seaweed, abalone, and conches from the ocean floor.

But life for the Haenyeo is changing fast. After seeing their number depleted by economic factors, their profession is now at risk from environmental changes. As rapidly warming waters transform the seabed, what could the future hold?
