Have a NAS? Did you buy a UPS?

I have been running my Synology DS918+ for almost a year now. When I bought it I had not considered getting a UPS at the time. To be honest I thought why would I need one?
Well as I have come to rely on its software and features, I have always had access until the local area suffered a power cut. It was not until I got home that I was able to power my system back up.

When I did power it back on, it seemed to take longer than normal to boot back up. Its horrible while you wait, and you get that sinking feeling thinking I hope the raid has not screwed up.
Well luckily everything was ok, but to be honest why leave things to chance? That's when I decided that I should get a UPS. No its not the parcel service. An uninterruptible power supply is a battery backup device that will not only keep the NAS up and running during a power cut, it will also gracefully shut down the NAS after a certain time. It costs under £80. A lot less than the expensive NAS and drives.
Then when the mains power is restored it will start the NAS back up.
If you have invested in a NAS, you really should look at getting a UPS, not only does it give you piece of mind, it also takes the power management of the device out of your hands.
